Abstract

Marlowe‘s ―The Passionate Shepherd to His Love‖, Shakespeare‘s ―Spring‖, and Nashe‘s ―Spring‖ are pastoral poems which express the Elizabethan romanticism through symbols found in those poems. Romanticism can be found in a lot of eras but Elizabethan romanticism may be different from those of other eras. Thus, it is important to find the romanticism of the Elizabethan era through the symbols used in the poems. Northrop Frye‘s theory of symbols is applied in order to analyze the symbols. Frye discusses some phases of symbols such as literal or descriptive phase, formal phase, mythical phase and anagogic phase. The method that is used by the writer is done through some steps. First, the writer reads the poems one by one, then identifies the symbols found in the poems and looks up their meanings in the dictionaries of symbols. Hence, through the meanings of symbols that could be found, the symbols are identified whether they express the romanticism or not. Afterward, the writer searches each poet‘s characteristics in writing the poems because different poets could have different ideas. The writer uses descriptive interpretative method for the poems, as the main source, to find their meanings by interpretation. The study is focusing on how the Elizabethan romanticism could be seen in the symbols used in the poems. The result is the Elizabethan romanticism seen in the symbols is related to nature, animals, domestic aspects, daily life, body and arts.
