Abstract

Authentic materials are language materials that are intended for native speakers, not second language learners (Cook, 1981). The materials are not addressed for language teaching (Nunan, 1999). Nowadays, they are used for language teaching and also able to bridge the real language outside into the classroom. This research is aimed to examine the application of authentic materials in English Language Teaching in SMA 5 Surabaya, which is one of the best RSBI in Surabaya, and to analyze the obstacles occurring in the implementation process. The qualitative descriptive approach and case study design were used in this research. Interview, questionnaires, observation, and syllabus and reference book study were used to collect the data. The participants were 3 English teachers and 30 eleventh-grade students. The writer found that there have been quite various authentic materials applied in the teaching of four language skills. However, the way of the teaching in some classes was not quite communicative if seen from the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach. There are some major obstacles found in the implementation process, such as the limited knowledge of the teachers about the authentic materials, the inconsistency in its implementation, the big size of the classes, the lack of standardization of teachers, the limited materials for teaching listening, and limited innovation in tasks for reading and listening. To improve the application of authentic materials in English Language Teaching in SMA 5 Surabaya, the writer gives some suggestions such as holding more training and workshop for the teachers, discussing the appropriate authentic materials for ELT, using the facilities more optimally, and giving more alternative tasks for reading and listening.
