Abstract

This study aims to examine how the Victorian women are portrayed in Anne Brontё’sAgnes Grey. Women are influenced by some aspects not only the traditional gender roles and patriarchy but also capitalism ideology. They are treated unfairly in the society. The discussion will analyze about the events, dialogues and conflicts in the novel by elaborating these issues. The analysis will deliver the concepts of Victorian women and their determined characterswho affirm and confront these concepts. The writer uses feminism theory in analyzing the novel since it is considered as the most appropriate theory to analyze the novel. The results indicated that women are oppressed in the family and society because of the patriarchal and capitalism influences. These women do not have enough freedom to show their feelings, choose their own ways and do anything they want. The society treats them differently from men. The conclusion is that the study is to give better views about Victorian women, about the way society treats them and how the characters react toward it.
