Abstract

This study attempts to discuss issue raised in the drama A Man For All Seasons written by Robert Bolt. This drama portrays many issues, but the writer finds the resistance of power strongly depicted in this drama. Therefore, the writer focuses her analysis on the existence of power related to its impact defined as resistance. In analyzing this issue, the writer uses a qualitative methodology by elaborating dialogues, events, acts and conflicts in the drama and applies two concepts of power suggested by Michel Foucault. According to Foucault, power is derived from discourses accepted by society which is also called as knowledge. From this study, the writer finds that there are two forms of power depicted in this drama. The first power is the power of King Henry as the King of England. The second power is the power of Thomas More as the both King’s Counselor and the saint of Catholic Church. These two forms of power raise the chain of resistance in which these powers are resistance to each other. This condition meets the second concept of Foucault about power and resistance. The power of King Henry circulates into the resistance for the power of Thomas More. On the other hand, power of Thomas More also circulates into the resistance for the power of King Henry.
