Abstract

This study is about news interview turn-taking system, which is distinctive from other broadcast talk, related to two major tasks of professional journalists. It is aimed to know how the participants of Apa Kabar Indonesia Malam manage their interaction to produce talk for overhearing audience. It is also aimed to find out the techniques used by the interviewer in maintaining neutralism while challenging interviewees. Those aspects can be analyzed by investigating the turntaking procedures. This study used Conversation Analysis (CA) as an approach because it does place much greater emphasis on the close analysis of individual cases and can be ground any analysis in the understandings and orientations of participants themselves. The object in this study is an episode of Apa Kabar Indonesia Malam which is divided into two segments with two different topics. The writer focuses on the second segment which involves five participants; an interviewer, three interviewees and an expert with the genre is a panel interview. The result of this study reveals that news interview is targeted for an overhearing audience with the interviewer as the controller of the turn-taking management. In panel interview, however, the role of interviewer become less central and is removed to act as catalyst of conflict. In maintaining neutralism, the interviewer uses two techniques, they are playing as „devil‟s advocate‟ and formulating the gist of interviewees‟ remarks.
