Abstract

This study focuses on utterances that flout the maxims of Grice’s Cooperative Principle produced by the speakers in talk show program entitled Online. It aims at analyzing the utterances that flout the maxim of Cooperative Principles and revealing the implicature carried on it because implicature arises when the speakers flout one of the maxims of Cooperative Principles. The corpus of this study was the two episodes of Online broadcasted on January 20th and February 23rd, 2010. The writer analyzed the data by applying the theory of Cooperative Principle and Conversational Implicature as proposed by Grice (1975). In this way the study used qualitative approach because it analyzed the meaning and understanding gained through words. Finally the writer found that the maxim of relation was frequently flouted by the speakers in order to create a humorous situation. It was because the speaker often changed the topic from the common topic into the humor one. The results also showed that the type of conversational implicature that frequently occurred was particularized implicature. It was because in making the inference the hearer had to consider the context in which the utterances occurred. Furthermore the writer also found that most of flouting maxims were meant for making a humorous situation. It is reasonable since the goal of the talk show is to entertain the audience
