Abstract

This study concerns on language and gender’s issue. The writer indentifies communicative competence of Olga and Jeng Kelin in Online talk show and describes communicative competence of Olga and Jeng Kelin reflecting on Lakoff’s language and gender theory. The writer uses four principal foci of communicative competence by Lakoff to analyze the data. To obtain the data, the writer downloaded an episode of Online talk show from YouTube. In analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive analysis method. First, the writer transcribed the data. Second, identified and determined the main focus of Olga’s and Jeng Kelin’s communicative competence. Third, the writer discussed the main focus of Olga’s and Jeng Kelin’s communicative competence reflecting on Lakoff’s language and gender theory. After analyzing the data, the writer found that Olga mostly uses camaraderie and clarity strategy, while Jeng Kelin mostly uses deference and camaraderie strategy. The general interpretation of individual styles reflecting on language and gender theory reveals that Olga is superior and Jeng Kelin is inferior in this talk show.
