Abstract
Setting, as an outside force, gives the probability of affecting the very essence of a personage or a character. Therefore, the elements outside of a person may be able to create a great impact in shaping the ones inside, especially the inner self. This phenomenon can be deeply analyzed from Alexandre Dumas‘ The Count of Monte Cristo’. The theory of characterization and setting were applied in this analysis as part of the theory of literature suggested by Rene Wellek and Austin Warren, also supported by diction as a literary device. This analysis is centered on the direct and indirect descriptions of typical setting to learn about the qualities of characters‘ inner self; inspecting the disclosures from five points of view which are Mood, Personality, Situation, Social context, and Customs and Beliefs of characters in the story. The research concludes that using the interrelationship of the elements of fiction, one could find out the effects of typical settings‘ influences toward the characters‘ inner self which are their feelings, states, traits, status, traditions and beliefs
