Abstract

This study aims to know the ideological construction of news reports about tsunami in Mentawai in Jawa Pos and Kompas. This stThis study aims to know the ideological construction of news reports about tsunami in Mentawai in Jawa Pos and Kompas. This study used the qualitative method since this method gave the way to understand how the media covers the issue about tsunami. In analyzing the data, the writer used the Critical Discourse Analysis which is proposed by van Dijk. The theory is known as socio-cognitive approach which is based on the three text levels: microstructure, superstructure, and microstructure. By applying the three levels of the text, the writer can find the theme of the news reports in Jawa Pos and Kompas. How the language influence the theme is also observed by this text levels. The writer also tries to know the comparison between Jawa Pos and Kompas in delivering the news. The writer saw the comparison from the text levels. The writer found that the theme of the news reports is the bad coordination and the lack of lateness which occurred in Mentawai. This theme was supported with the linguistic features: lexicon, graphic, background, details, presupposition, and coherence. Thus, from the three levels, it can be found that the discourse of natural disaster (tsunami) s related to the disaster management which the focus is still only the government. More specifically is the negative side of the government because the government is reported as the side that has the responsibility for the condition of the victims, and the condition of Mentawai post-tsunami. The writer also found that Jawa Pos and Kompas have different way in presenting the news. It can be seen from the three text level.
