Abstract

The selection of vasectomy contraception method of men in couples of childbearing age is still low. This study compare the factors which influence behavior of the selection method of vasectomy contraception method in men of couples based on the Theory of Planned Behavior/ TPB in district Kenjeran Surabaya. The study design used was case-control. With the number of samples used was 40 respondents consisting of 20 respondents in vasectomy group as case group, and 20 respondents of non-vasectomy group (other than vasectomy method used by the wife or husband) as a control group, then the sample was selected according to the inclusion criteria. Independent variables include attitude towards behavior (ATB), subjective norms (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), and intention. The dependent variable was the behavior of selection method of vasectomy contraception. Instruments used in data collection were questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using the Mann Whitney U test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed that there was no difference in the ATB (p = 0.333), SN (p = 0.727), PBC (p = 0.157), yet there was a difference in intention (p = 0.002) between the vasectomy and non vasectomy group’s behavior of selection method of vasectomy. Thus, we can conclude that the behavior in selecting vasectomy method in the vasectomy and non vasectomy group has the same ATB, SN, and PBC. However, the two groups have different intention, which affects them in using vasectomy or non vasectomy method. It is suggested for further research to use the same issue with different method, for example to compare the wifes’ attitudes towards vasectomy contraceptive methods.
