Abstract

When we are discussing topics that are considered as sensitive, such as death, religion, excretion, and sex, the use of euphemism is very helpful to continue the discussion. There is always the tendency to protect the “face”, moreover in media. This research examines the euphemism formations, according to Allan’s (2012) classification of euphemism formation, for death and sickness, and sexual terms in Dr. Oz Indonesia talk show. The function(s) of the used euphemism is also inspected, based on Burridge’s (2012) classifications of euphemism functions. The data was taken from the euphemisms used by the speaker in the selected video. The selected videos were taken only from segments of the show that discuss related topics. The used euphemisms then were analysed by putting them on table and classified them one by one by how they are formed. The function of the used euphemism was also determined. Finally, based on the results of the most used formation and function of euphemism, the interpretation was made out of it. The findings show that they are formed by using clipping, general-for-specific, circumlocution, litotes, hyperbole, substitution, and verbal play. The functions of euphemism that are used in the show are protective, underhand, uplifting, and provocative functions.
