Abstract

This study investigates the use of comic strip as a means to promote students’ storytelling ability. Although comic strip has already had its own story, it can be used for educational purpose. In this study, the comic strip is educational one, meaning that this comic strip taken from a comic book which was designed to be used in language learning. The use of comic strips to prompt students’ storytelling ability was compared to the use of common short stories This study applies two main theories of the influence of story by Morgan and Rinvolucri (1983) and the theory of comic and visual aid by Varnum& Gibbons (2001). This study used a descriptive qualitative case study design. It used two main data collection techniques, classroom observation and questionnaire. The study reveals that using English comic strips for educational purpose can be an alternative way to promote students’ storytelling ability. Comic strip is also viewed as a helping medium to provide better context in understanding a story.
