Abstract
This dissertation is the result of research which deals with Abshar Abdallah’ s thought about Islamic discourse and democracy. It is expected to be the best solution of ecological development in religious pluralism which is acceptable sunnatullah in society. Pluralism sustains the spirit of respect to other religions and cultures in addition to form the harmonious life of religious society. This theme is one of the most actual issues, has dominated public discourses after the forbidden statement haram of MUI toward pluralism and liberalism in Islam. Consequently, it needs to be researched and analyzed to the problems of Islam and democracy, in addition to construct the problem of religious varieties and social realities which is finally used to be social capital to maintain the harmony of social religious life. Theoretically, this dissertation also refers to Michel Foucault’s hermeneutic critic perspective is so called discourse analysis. Furthermore, the statements of problems are broken down into general and specific as in the followings: In general, How does Ulil Abshar Abdalla figure out the realities around Islam and Democracy? Specifically, How does Ulil figure out the relation between Islam and democratic state?, How does Ulil figure out the ideas about Islamic state and applying Islamic teachings syariat in the context of Indonesia Pancasilais ? How does Ulil figure out religious pluralism in line with the principles or the people’s basic rights to freedom, liberty, and equality?, and to be more specific, How does Ulil figure out the women’s position in Islam from the democratic state perspective as an individual and as a part of society? Methodologically, this dissertation was designed in the qualitative perspective and interpretative approach. It was intended to discuss the social phenomenon specifically and uniquely. In addition, micro perspective, this dissertation used critical hermeneutic perspective, mainly, Foucault’s discourse analysis model “Archeology and Genealogy Idea”. To collect data, the researcher used interview and study of documentation. To analyze the data, he analyzed inductively as follows: connecting the data, categorizing the data, comparing the data, finding the data relation, making data reduction, and making conclusion. Besides, this dissertation also used reflective methodology to analyze subject’s behavior directly related to the main themes of the dissertation. The researcher used this methodology in order to enhance more valid data acquired. Basically, this dissertation aims at three main reasons. Firstly, it is more than a biography. It is considered as social ethnography which not only describes Ulil Abshar Abdalla’s thought in chosen themes but also intends to give context and constellate with some problems to Ulil’s sustainable thought complexity. Secondly, it does not only contain the collection of thought from the subject to be researched but also describe Ulil Abshar Abdalla’s center plank thought. In other words, this dissertation is more than the description of thoughts or statements, and argumentation. It is the framework from the way of thinking and Ulil’s ideas from strategic themes about democracy and Islam issues. Thirdly, sociologically, this dissertation is about context and social constellation which is interconnected on how a person made structure among realities surroundings. Accordingly, this dissertation covers Ulils’ thought about Islam and democracy problems. In sum, this dissertation covers Ulil’s thought that Islam and democracy are integrated. Islam and democracy are compatible. Besides, the democratic principles, for example: equality, brotherhood, freedom, and justice which are in line with Ulil’s perspective thought. Nothing is against with the basic principles of Islam. In fact, Islam supports those principles in social life. It is as the same as the women’s position in Islam. What Ulil has done so far, can not only figure out as the individual reaction from the sustainable collection of thought in the society but also cover creative and progressive respond toward knowledge which has effects of power and domination. The intention of knowledge which has effects of power and domination is basically cited from Foucault’s main thought. It stated that “there is no knowledge without power, on the other hand; there is no power without knowledge”.
