Abstract
Plants were used in air phytoremediation due to its ability in absorption and being tolerant of air pollution stress. Level of plant tolerance to air pollution was expressed by Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI). Sulphur dioxide, was one of toxic gaseous air pollutants, which may caused leaf injury. The toxicity of SO2 increased with increasing in oxygen free radical formation. Plants posed glutathione to counteract the oxygen free radical toxicity and the ability of a plant to detoxify oxygen free radicals is considered to be a tolerance mechanism. Glutathione is an antioxidant that plays a role in the non-enzymatic defense system against chemicals, as well as detoxification. The purpose of this study was to develop methods of determining index of plants tolerance of air pollutants, by inserting glutathione as a plant tolerance indicator to SO2 air pollutant. Research was conducted on Puring (Codiaeum variegatum L.), as a model plant. This study carried on five research steps to obtain the data of Puring #8223;s APTI at different doses of SO2 gas exposure, on various environmental conditions. Study on APTI as a potential indicator as well pollution phytoremediator of SO2, was done by a correlation-regression analyzes approach between APTI and sulphur content in the leaves, between APTI and glutathione levels, and between glutathione and sulphur levels. Tolerance index of plants to SO2 air pollutants was modified by using factor analysis. The results showed that there was a real positive correlation between glutathione and APTI, but there was no relationship between phytoremediation potential of plants to air pollutants and the tolerance of plants to SO2 air pollutants, based on the analysis of correlation between APTI and sulphur content. It seems that plants provide a defense signal against to the SO2 air pollutants by adjustment the glutathione levels. The factor analyze results obtained that there are three variables that provide a strong influence on the value of APTI; those are glutathione, chlorophyll, and relative water contents. Equation model in the Y #8223;- form, illustrated that tolerance index of plants to SO2 air pollution can be predicted by factor-score. Factor-score is a linear combination of vector variables (Z) of glutathione, chlorophyll and water content components. Factor analysis equation for the tolerance index of plants to SO2 air pollutants can be represented in Y #8223;-form as: Y #8223; = Xk + 0,66 Xg + 0,23 Xa – 55
