Abstract

Recent development in corpus linguistics has brought about a significant contribution to monolingual English learner dictionaries. Unfortunately, the current bilingual learner dictionaries, covering English and Indonesian, have not derived the same benefit from corpus linguistics. The reasons are attributable to the availability of Indonesian corpus, the knowledge of the lexicographers about corpus linguistics or corpus lexicography, and the awareness of the lexicographers on the modem lexicographical theories or principles. This paper explores the theoretical considerations in using corpora for creating English-Indonesian and Indonesian-English dictionaries in order to produce better bilingual dictionaries in the future. The corpora are taken from and analysed by using the sketch engine and the lexicographical principles are based on the lexicographical function theory. The sketch engine is chosen because it is the only place that bas a big Indonesian corpus. The lexicographical function theory is used because it focuses on the needs of the users. Consequently, the proposed dictionary concepts shall derive the benefit from corpus linguistics and can better satisfy the needs of the users or the learners. The discussion in this paper is divided into five sections. The first seytion describes the problems faced by the users when consulting the current English-Indonesian and Indonesian-English dictionaries. The second section gives an overview of the theory and tool used to formulate the solutions. The principles for creating an English-Indonesian dictionary and an Indonesian English dictionary are explained in the third and the fourth sections, respectively. The last section draws a conclusion and makes suggestions for future work.
