Abstract
Leprosy is a contagious disease that creates complexities. East Java is one the provinces in Indonesia with a high number of leprous sufferers, accounting for one-third of the total sufferers in Indonesia. In Ngawi Regency leprosy case finding is still a problem quality-wise and quantity-wise. The high rate of case finding in children (>5%) compared to new case findings illustrate how in Ngawi Regency there still exists disease transmission. The high disability rate (>5%) show there is a delay in leprosy case finding. The problem observed in this research is limited to: What is the role of the leprosy society in an effort to increase new leprosy case finding in Ngawi Regency? The aim of this research is to analyze the role of the leprosy society in an effort to increase new leprosy case finding in Ngawi Regency and to come up with a recommendation for the purpose of increasing performance of the leprosy program in Ngawi Regency. This is a cross-sectional analytical observational research. The population covers members of the leprosy society of Padas Public Health Center (PHC) and non-members from PHCs of Geneng, Teguhan, Bringin, and Sine of Ngawi Regency. Conducted in May and June of 2006, it involves 41 respondents from the leprosy society of Padas PHC and 25 respondents from Geneng, Teguhan, Bringin, and Sine PHCs. The results of this research show that there was a significant difference between leprosy society members and non-members in regards to their need for a leprosy prevention program, attitude towards leprosy and role in leprosy case finding. There was no significant difference between members and non-members in regards to knowledge, measures and perception of support from community leaders. Respondents expected: routine treatment to be performed in order to establish an early detection; no isolation during their sickness; prompt medication monitored medication once new sufferers are found; and a socialization of the creation of leprosy sufferer and former sufferer group be done in the community. Respondents motivation in activities of leprosy prevention programs mainly because of physiological and social needs. According to respondents perception, support from community leaders has been satisfactory. Community leaders have also stated their willingness to assist in the new case finding. The most influential factor in the participation role is action. The conclusion of this research is: a need to empower leprosy sufferers and former sufferers in the effort to increase new case findings, inter-sector and inter-program coordination to satisfy expectations and increase sufferer and former sufferer motivation, an increase of promotional efforts and the need to maintain service quality in PHCs to avoid being the last resort in leprosy treatment.
