Abstract
The research deals with patriarchal culture at the pesantren Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Situbondo. The culture gives a different opportunity between man and Ivoman. Man, from this perspective, gets more chance compare to woman in all aspect of life. The aim of this research is to analyze and to describe the views of the pesantren society on the patriarchal culture, the factors which lead and support the existence of the culture at Pesantren Salafiyah Syafi' iyah. Kecamatan Banyu Putih, Situbondo. This research was a field research which employs case study approach. The source appiied is getting from some resource persons that can be classified into three groups: kyai, ustadz-ustadzah and santri. The methods used to collect the data were observation (observer as observer), in depth interview, documentation, and library. After all, the data was used to describe and to analyze using a qualitative method The results from this research are: first, there were two point of views which contradict between the two regarding the position between man and woman. One group has a progressive point of view that is accepting the new pattern, while the other group still affirms conservative outlook. The opposition between the two groups was their educational background and their experiences outside the pesantren. Second, the patriarchal culture can be found in the form of the norms constructed by the pesantren.It has been found that the forms give the different oppotunity in any case between santri (man) and santriwati (woman). Third, this research also finds the factors that hold up the existence of this culture at the pesantren, among other things are religious doctrines, kiai, interaction with outside pesantren and Javanese-Madurese cultures. Based on the research findings, the formulation of solution to make equality between man and woman must be come up. The formulation suggested is to give religious doctrine in a progressive stance in order religion and islamic society can support the program of gender equality.
