Abstract

Background : It is widely promoted of some currently available calcium-rich milk (2400 mg Ca) for elderly women to prevent osteoporosis. The recommendation of calcium intake for the elderly (all person over 51 years) is 800 mg/day. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of high calcium milk on gastric secretion and acidity. Methode : 48 rats were divided into 4 groups. One group, feeding with high calcium milk (2400 mg, 1200 mg, 600 mg). Other groups consumed calcium tablet (2400 mg, 1200 mg, 600 mg) or aquadest and the last is controlled group (untreated group). At the end of 48 hours starvation all of the rats were examine after piloric ligation. Collection of gastric juice and examination of gastric acidity we made 4 hours after piloric ligation. Result : Difference in gastric volume between the treated groups and control was found to be significant (p=0,0288). However, no significant difference in the means of pH measurement of gastric juice was found between the four different groups studied (a > 0,05). Conclusion : The level of calcium fortified milk in this study was not associated with increase in gastric juice volume. Calcium footified milk may reduce the mean pH in accordance increase in the level of calcium, which was non statistically significant.
