Abstract
ABSTRACT Increasingly competitive business conditions would drive companies to maintain a high degree of competitiveness in order to survive. The role of human resources in a service industry was substantial for the benefit of customers. For these reasons, the PT. Sucofindo Area Surabaya, which was the study case in this research, had to raise its competitive edge by improving the skill of its personnel. These were all in line with its vision and mission to be accomplished by engaging the best available people with skill and abilities which would contribute to the company progress through a performance appraisal system supported by a human resources information systems. This arrangement brought convenience to the users in making decisions to identify the type or tanning suitable to the diverse fields of work and career development, thereby motivating the employees and heightening their professional standards. This research aimed, first to fmd out the quality of the system of personnel performance appraisal at the PT. Sucofindo Area Surabaya, second to develop a human resources information system at the same company, which in turn supported the performance appraisal system so as to help improve staff trainning and upgrade performance. This research sought to collect up-to-date and accurate information required for the appraisal of performance on which the executives capitalized to make correct decisions and carry out the evaluation of human resource management. Qualitative research into this study case indicated that the absence in the company of a proper performance appraisal system and of a well-organized human resources management resulted in such problems as unsuitable tainning patterns and lack of career identification. The results of this research proved that enhancement of the human resources information system supporting the performance appraisal system would lead to a more focussed method of trainning to suit the different spheres of work and personel career development In the fmal end, it all generates a business loyality that would bring about improved professional servise and more congenital benefits for the company.
