Abstract

The research was to analyze factors related to the ability of the cadres in diagnosing patient with malaria for the purpose of overcoming malaria disease. The research used analytical observation with cross-sectional design. The observed variables involved characteristic factors of the cadres (age, sex, level of education, primary occupation, length of being cadre of malaria, cases investigated when being cadre, knowledge, attitude and behavior), health service factors (training and guidance), and environmental factor (distance of the cadre's house to health service). The sample involved 31 persons from 3 local government clinics namely Panite, Niki-Niki, and Oekam. The data were collected through examination of blood supply of the patient with malaria by microscopic staff of the clinics and interview with the cadres of malaria. Data analysis used Chi square test (Epi info 6.0) and Multiple Logistic Regressions using SPSS software version 7.5. The result of the study showed that the ability of the cadres in investigating malaria cases was still low namely 32.3%, its positive slide rate was also low namely 42.6%. The result of the analysis for each research variable showed that the length of being cadre of malaria and the number of cases investigated significantly related to the ability of the cadres of malaria in diagnosing the patient. However after the factors were examined simultaneously using multiple logistic regression, it was recognized that the factor which had significant relation was the number of cases investigated. We suggest that further training for improving the ability of the cadres of malaria is urgently required. The existing cadres should be motivated, by incentive, to investigate as many as malaria cases. Screening of malaria and improvement of malaria cadres by local clinic staffs such as midwife and other health staffs should be continuously conducted.
