Abstract

The general objective of this research is to study factors that related with selection of birth attendant in Dani Ethnic. Research was carried out in district area of Bogolakme, Resident of Jayawijaya. Research has carried out in September until Nopember, 2001. Benefit of this research was as input material in order to arrange a policy of mortality infant reduction level program (IMR) and reduction of mortality maternal mother level (MMR) in Province of Papua and able to delivered information for research in health-anthropology area in Province of Papua This research applied design that has qualitatif characteristic and was study observational that later was carried out with interview way and observation to respondents, that were to mothers in Dani Ethnic who ever to birth that was helped by birth attendant. Time for collecting data by Cross Sectional. That sample were 53 mother in birth condition who were helped by personil of birth attendant. Taking sample by multi stage random sampling. Result of this research was drawn a conclusion that 29 respondents (54,7%) prefer Midwife birth attendant and 24 respondents (45,3%) who was remain prefer birth attendant to medical personil , especially to Bidan. It was achieved 66,0 %age of mother when to birth was 20-30 years old; 54,7% respondents have 5-7 people as a family members and 50,8% sequent of child who was born was first born. And 52,8% respondents have low education; 35,1% respondents have inadequate knowledge about birth and most of their husband's work as farmers and agriculture's labor. It have 86,8% respondents has belief and confidence to prefer birth attendant. It achieve 96,2% who have own home and with 56,6% have enough wealth and 37,7%have adequate earning. It achieve 66,0% respondents that give a statement that birthing facility was inadequate: 54,7% declares that scope of birth rescue services was enough; it just 34,0% offer various birth rescue services and 41,5% respondents declared that cost of birth was cheap. According Chi Square test and Fisher 's Exact Test were achieved factors that gave contribution to selection of birth attendant in Dani Ethnic in District of Bogoklame with a = 0,05 was : belief to birth attendant to respondents, birth facility, scope of services, birth rescue services system, demand to birth attendant and various of birth services. From result of this research that could be delivered suggestion that must was more increased to understanding of health-anthropology for medical personil, especially bidan who located in inside area ; need more birth rescue building and training intensively to Midwife ; and also need increasing community human resources, especially scope of reference health services to birthing by develop health facility in primitif areas and transportation facility development
