Abstract
The objective of the research is to know the influence of air pollutant towards the infant growth and development in industrial town Gresik, Jawa Timur. The epidemiological study design used in this research was "prospective cohort study"_ The cohort consisted of infants, which were born during September to November 2000, than followed up one year afterwards. The observation to the cohort were conducted in three phases of infants: 1) up to six month 2) up to nine month 3) up to twelve month of age. The research location comprised exposed area surrounding industrial zone in sub district of Cresik, Kebomas and Manyar (as study area), and non-exposed area that was sub district of Sedayu, thirty kilometers from central town (as control area). The result of this research showed that the level of Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen oxide and dust in exposed area was higher than those in unexposed area, however it was still under environmental quality standard of East Java. The incidence Rate of growth disorder of 6-month infants in exposed area (tR=19.8%) and in unexposed area (IR=11.0%) did not differ significantly (p=0.075). However, Incidence Rate of growth disorder of 9-month infants in expose area (IR=19.8%) and those in unexposed area (IR=8.8%) were significantly different (p=0.0.034). While Incidence Rate of growth disorder of 12-month infants in exposed area (IR==429%) and those in unexposed area (IR=16.5%) were significantly different (p—0.00). In the meantime, the infant development on the third phase in exposed area and unexposed area did not differ significantly. By multiple logistic regression analyzes it was concluded that air pollutant exposure could affect the incidence rate of growth disorder of 9-month infants (p—0.0013; RR=-3.4949) and the incidence rate of growth disorder of 12-month infants (p=0.00; RR=3.0508)
