Abstract

Family Portunidae is herein evaluated via cladistic analysis of morphological characters; nine species of Portunids were collected from Madura Strait during the research. The objective of this study was to investigate the cladistic relationship among swimming Portunidae crabs on the East coast of Surabaya. Twenty eight characters were used to construct a cladogram. Cladistic analysis is based on the Wagner Method and the polarity of character is based loosely on the requirements given by Karasawa, Schweitzer, Feldmann, (2008), Grapsidae are used as an outgroup to test the monophyly of Portunidae. Nine species were collected, including two subfamilies, ie Portuninae with four genus and eight species as follows: Charybdis annulata, C. feriatus, C. affinis, C. anisodon, Portunus pelagicus, Scylla serrata , S. tranquebarica, S. paramamosain and subfamily Podophtalminae with Podophtalmus vigil. Only four species ie P. pelagicus, S. serrata, S. tranquebarica, and S. paramamosain have economical value. Some of characters were used as a key to identify Portunids ie orbital, anterolateral margin, cheliped, frontal teeth, carpus, and spine. The analysis indicates that two major clades were identified for Portuninae, the first clade includes S. serrata ,S. tranquebarica, S. paramamosain, and the second one, C. annulata, C. feriatus, C. affinis. Two clades marked by a combination of Subfamilies Grapsidae and Podophtalminae ie. Neopisesarma mederi and P. vigil and the other is a combination of C. anisodon with P. pelagicus.
