Abstract

Background. Childhood tuberculosis was still a problem especially in developing countries and caused at least 64,000 children died in 2011. Prevalence of smear-positive pulmonary TB in Indonesia was still high at 281 per 100,000 population in 2011. Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) screening by Health Office of Gresik District in 2012 showed 43% of children contact with adult patients gave positive results. Objectives. The study analyzed determinant of positive TST results among children less than 15 years old which had contact with TB patients. Methodes. A matching case-control study of 78 children contact with TB patients, 39 children with positive TST as case and 39 children with negative TST as control, investigated using a questionnaire and home visit. Data processed by bivariate analysis for paired samples using McNemar and Wilcoxon Marginal Homogeneity. Risk factor was determined by calculating the Odds Ratio. Results. Determinants of positive TST result were duration of contact with TB patient every day (p = 0.004), Positivity degree of Acid-Fast Bacili (AFB) smear of TB patient contact with children (p = 0.003), low-income families (p = 0.035; OR = 2.83; 95% CI), high density residents (p = 0.013; OR = 4.67; 95% CI) and high humidity house (p = 0.001; OR = 14.00; 95% CI). Conclusion. Children less than 15 years old living in low-income families 2,83 times higher risk of positive TST result, living in high densitiy residents 4,67 more at risk and living in high humidity house 14 times higher risk of positive TST results
