Abstract

Backgroud : Dental caries still continues to be the most common oral infectiious disease. streptococcus mutants is the main cause of dental caries bacteria. purle leaf (grapthophllum pictum (L) griff) is one of traditional medicinal plants which contains flavonoid, alkaloid, saponin and tannin that has antimicrobial effect. purpose: the aim of the study was to prove the antibacterial potency of purple leaf ( grapthophllum pictum (L) griff)ekstraction againt S. mutans by determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). this research was descriptive study. method: the purple leaves were macerated with 90% ethanol. and then the extract were antibacterial activity tested with dilution method using several concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125% 1.56%, and 0.78%. followed by planting in the TYC agar. minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was found on the 7th tube (1.56%) while minimum bactericidal concentraction (MBC) was found on the 6th tube (3.125%) which is characterized by the absence of the growth of S.mutans in TYC agar. conclusion: etanol ectract of purple leaf ( grapthophllum pictum (L) griff)has antibacterial activity with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1,56% and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 3,125% against s.mutant keywords: extract purple leaf (( grapthophllum pictum (L) griff), minimal inhibitory concentartion (MIC), minimum concentaration (MIC), streptococcus mutans
