Abstract
Avian Influenza is a contagious disease of avian species caused by type A influenza viruses with different subtypes. Wild bird / migratory waterfowl are the natural reservoir of avian influenza viruses in gastrointestinal channel and do not cause disease symptoms. Indonesia is one of the five countries where HPAI H5N1 subtype remain endemic in puoltry and also have high diversity of bats, and East Java is one of province in Indonesia that endemic with Avian Influenza virus. The Aim of this study was to find the evidence of Avian Influenza (H5) in Bats collected from East Java. The sample collection was done at Februari 2015. The further research were conducted from February to April 2015 in Bisafety Level 2 – Laboratory, Avian Influenza Research Center. Hemagglutinin inhibition Assay was the choosen method for acessing the presence of Avian Influenza Virus. The 70 bats were bought from bats butcher and pooled the organs based on system organs. The respiratory and gastrointestinal organs were ruptured and inoculate the supernatant into 9-11 days old embryonated chicken eggs. The allantoic fluid was tested for Hemagglutinin activity. The 11 from 70 allantoic fluid were showing positive result for hemagglutinin activity, and 2 of 11 positive Hemagglutinin activity were showing positive result for Hemagglutinin Inhibition activity. The two bats from this region ant that time carried Avian Influenza Virus and the bats served as infection source of Avian Influenza Virus.
