Abstract
Allergic diseases are more common in children aged less than 5 years old
due to immune system. This research aims to find out the association between
allergic manifestation and the history of antibiotic use of the toddler.
This research used analytic observational method along with cross
sectional design. The sampling technique was total sampling method. The data
were taken by direct interviews with the toddlers’ parents by using questionnaire
method in Bendan Community Health Center, Pekalongan City. The dependent
variable of this research was allergic manifestation, while independent variable
was the history of the antibiotic use and the confounding variables were genetic,
animal exposure, exclusive breastfeeding, age exposed to antigen and smoke
exposure. The data were analysed by using chi square with 95% of confidence
intervals.
From the 100 samples, 35% of them had allergic manifestations and 82%
had the history of antibiotic use. The results of the statistical test by using fisher’s
exact test, showed that there was an association between the allergic
manifestation and the history of antibiotic use for the mother during childbirth in
toddlers aged >24-36 months (p=0.036) and the history of antibiotic use for
mothers during breastfeed in toddlers aged>36-48 months (p=0.022).
This research concluded that there was a significant association between
the allergic manifestation and the history of antibiotic use for mothers during
childbirth in toddlers aged >24-36 months and the allergic manifestation and the
history of antibiotic use for mothers during breastfeed in toddlers aged >36-48
months.
