Abstract

Purpose : To analyze total transforming growth factor beta-2 (TGF-β2) intravitreal levels to grading of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) at Soetomo Hospital Surabaya Methods : A cross sectional study was conducted. Samples obtained were 30 units divided into 3 groups. 6 patients with PVR grade A, 18 patients with grade B and 6 patients with PVR grade C. Vitreous samples were taken undiluted from 30 patients with RRD at the beginning of primary vitrectomy. All vitreous samples were immediately frozen at -80º C until assayed. Total TGF-β2 level in vitreous were quantitated by human TGF-β2 sandwich ELISA. Result : The mean concentrations of total TGF-β2 intravitreal were 136,70  83,34 pg/ml. The mean concentration of total TGF-β2 intravitreal in PVR grade A groups were 86.2 ± 46.29 pg/ml, in PVR grade B groups were 138.27 ± 78.98 pg/ml, and PVR grade C groups were169.18 ± 102.38 pg/ml. The level of detectable total TGF-β2 in vitreous specimen ranged from 22,4 pg/ml to 373,70 pg/ml in RRD patients. Conclusion : There was no difference of total TGF-β2 intravitreal levels between the three groups of PVR, but the trend of intravitreal levels of total TGF-β2 increase in relation to the severity of PVR. Extent of detached retina was strongly correlated with grading of PVR. Concentrations of total TGF-β2 intravitreal of RRD patients with duration of symptoms more than or equal to ten days were significantly higher than in those RRD patient with duration of symptoms less than ten days.
