Abstract

Social phobia is also called social anxiety disorder, which mean a person feels fear in the crowd and feel uncomfortable being in that situation. Thomas A. Richards said that social anxiety is the fear of interacting with other people that make self-consciousness, feelings of being negatively judged and evaluated. The aim of this study is to explain how Jack’s social phobia displayed and how the symbol and tone support the Jack’s efforts to overcome his social phobia in Emma Donoghue novel. To analyze this novel, the writer uses New Criticism theory as a fit one. The writer uses qualitative method to solve the problem statement. Second, the writer collects the data and clasifies the data. Then the writer analyzes the data and provides the evidence of it to support the argument. The writer concludes that by analyzing the characterization, symbol and tone can show the effort of Jack in overcoming his social phobia after his great escape.
