Abstract

Academic article publication is compulsory in Indonesia, especially for doctoral students who have to produce a scientific journal article accepted to be published in international journals. One of the problems associated with the publication of the international journal is the use of words related to specific fields in English. The aim of this study is to analyze the words used in the scientific journal articles in the fields of health sciences and life sciences by using corpus linguistics approach. This study uses the mixed methods design which consists of qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. The corpora taken for this study comprise 426 scientific journal articles from 4 sub-fields of health sciences journals and 5 sub-fields of life sciences journals. The vocabulary classification is identified based on Nation (2001) and the technical vocabulary is investigate based on Chung and Nation (2004). In this case, 30 words are chosen from each sub-field by considering the range and frequency of the words. The words in each subfield are then merged together and the results are 75 academic article words in health sciences and 80 words in life sciences. Afterwards, comparing the academic article word lists of both fields. The results show that health sciences have more percentage in technical words rather than that of life sciences. This study also serve the comparison of these fields. The results of this study provide a useful word list for the English learners who want to write and publish articles in international journals.
