Abstract

Nowadays, the emergence and development of language varieties are very significant. It is related to the emergence of many speech communities in the society. They gather into groups or communities that affect the language or the variety they use. The language variation that appears in each groupis called register. This study aims to identify the linguistic features, the vocabulary and the morphological features, that mark the register of “Pak Yek” Auto Repair Shop. In addition, this study also describes how those features were used in the context. A qualitative approach was used in this study. The data were collected using some techniques, observation, recording, and note taking. Then, the vocabulary was analyzed using Holmes’ theory of register; whereas,the morphological features were analyzed using Lieber’s, Uhlenbeck’s, and Verhaar’s theories.The findings of the study show that the feature of the register that appeared in auto repair shop. The results show that the vocabularies which marked the register used in Pak Yek auto repair shop include 10 vocabularies in Indonesian, 6 vocabularies in Javanese, and 27 vocabularies might be borrowed from other languages. Furthermore, the morphological features involved6 processes:affixation, reduplication, clipping, initialism, borrowing, and compounding. In brief the register used by the mechanic and the customers in Pak Yek auto repair shop aims to communicate more effectively and efficiently
