Abstract

This study discussed about double consciousness experienced by a Native American in children‟s literature, The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian written by Sherman Alexie. Native American as the minority groups in the United States is considered as inferior by the White People, same as like Black Americans. The negative treatment they experienced is caused of the veil that covered them so that they see themselves through the eyes of others. Some Native Americans decide to move to white society to reach better condition of their life. This condition also happened to Junior, an adolescence who moved from reservation to white people school. Post-colonial study has been chosen as the proper theory of this research. Double consciousness proposed by W.E.B Du Bois as the main tool to uncover the issue. This study uses qualitative research as the method whereas the data taken from the novel, journals, books and article that has related issue. The writer finds out that double consciousness experienced by Junior is caused by the veil that covered him. In this research, double consciousness does not always lead to misery in someone‟s life. In contrast, double consciousness leads Junior to find his new identity.
