Abstract

The study examines the male main character in E. L. James’ Fifty Shades Trilogy, Christian Grey. The trilogy consists of three novels which entitle Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. This study discusses the negotiation of Grey’s Eros and Thanatos and its influences toward his life which are associated with his childhood trauma, Oedipus complex and the introduction to the BDSM (Bondage, Disciplinary, Sadism, and Masochism) practices. Freudian psychoanalysis theory will be used as the main theory, especially the discussion of Oedipus complex and Eros and Thanatos. This is a qualitative research where the data is taken from the Fifty Shades trilogy novel and other resources which are appropriate in conducting the analysis. This study finds that Christian Grey’s negotiation of his Eros and Thanatos are associated with his childhood trauma and Oedipus complex. In addition to that people that he met after his adoption by his foster family give significant role to his personality development.
