Abstract

Scientific writing is part of obligation for every academic. Scholars such as lecturers and post graduate students are expected to publish journal articles in international journals. However, lecturers and students in the doctoral program still have difficulties in the use of English in publishing articles in international journals because of many aspects, one of them is the vocabulary. This study aimed to identify the academic article word list in social sciences and physical sciences and discover the similarities and differences of the academic words in social sciences and physical sciences of the articles published by Elsevier. The data taken are from Elsevier journal articles i.e. social sciences and physical sciences. The articles are chosen based on the open access articles and 5-year impact factor. Based on those criteria, the writer took 174 journal articles of social sciences and 178 journal articles of physical sciences. In choosing the words, the writer used the central limit theorem which took 30 words for each sub discipline. Social sciences are further divided into 6 sub disciplines. These 6 sub disciplines shared the same 1 word. Then, physical sciences divided into 9 sub disciplines and shared the same 2 words. The results show that the word theory in social sciences and the words data and method in physical sciences are important to use in writing a research.
