Abstract

In this global era, online game has a major influence of the spread of English and one of the biggest online games in the world is DotA 2. The popularity of DotA 2 cannot be resisted by the local gamers in Indonesia so that they adopt some of the scene of international DotA 2 competition to be applied in Indonesia’s competition, for example the commentators which are usually called as casters. This study aims to find out the types of code-switching used and reasons that may ignite the use of code-switching by the Indonesian casters in the chosen event according to Hoffman’s theory (1991) about types of code-switching and its reasons. The data used in this study is the video of Final DotA 2 AGES Indonesia qualifier. By observing the data from the chosen event, it is discovered that there are six hundred and fifty-five (602) code-switching used by the casters. 91.53% of the used code-switching are intra-sentential switching. Among those numbers of code-switching, the writer took thirteen (12) utterances as the example to be discussed in this study. Therefore, the writer found out that five (5) out of twelve (12) code-switching data were caused by the particular topic discussed by the caster. The high number of intra-sentential switching used by the casters might be caused by the speaker’s convenience in delivering some particular messages.
