Abstract

Objective : Differentiation cell was triggered by EBER expression in NPC patients. EBER expression associated with histopathological type of NPC. High of EBER expression by in situ hybridization examination associated with the differentiation cell of tumors. The present study was designed to examine the role of EBER expression and histopathological type of NPC. Study Design: Cross sectional. Methods : Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens were obtained. The expression of EBER was studied with in situ hybridization (HIS) using Biotin-labeled oligonucleotide probes were labeled ZytoFast EBV and ZytoFast Plus CISH Implementation Kit HRP-DAB (from ZytoVision GmbH-Fischkai, Bremerhaven, Germany) then given Mayer's hematoxylin staining. EBER expression assessment carried out by a specialist consultant Anatomical Pathology using imunoreactive scale score (IRS). The Fisher's exact test was used to determine the association between expression of EBER and histopathological type of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0,05. Result : Total samples are 30 patients. The result of EBER expression in NPC patients with histopathological type I WHO obtained 1 sample was negative, 1 sample weak positive, 1 sample moderate positive and one sample strong positive. Patients with histopathological type II WHO obtained 2 samples was negative, 2 samples weak positive, 5 samples moderate positive and 4 samples strongly positive. Patients with histopathological type III WHO obtained 4 samples was negative, 4 samples moderate positive and 5 samples strong positive. EBER expression from all sample there was 7 samples (23.33%) negative, 3 samples (10,00%) was weak positive, moderate positive and strong positive was respectively 10 samples (33,33%). Statistical analysis using Fisher's exact test was obtained p = 0.623. Conclusion : There was not association between EBER expression and histopathological type of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
