Abstract

Newspapers provide a lot of information. However, students in language field might find more than that. They can find a plenty of linguistic data that are useful for their study. Newspapers have their own specific discourse in order to make the readers understand the content. Cohesion can be used in order to create the connection between sentences. The aims of this study are to find out the types of cohesive devices and to identify what types of cohesive devices is mostly used in an article. It uses the types of cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and Renkema (2004). The writer uses an article about Bali Nine published in online newspaper The Australian. The results show several main findings. First, the writer finds that the types of grammatical cohesion used in the article are reference, conjunction, and substitution. Second, the lexical cohesion that are used in the article are repetition and synonymy. Third, based on the data, reference is the most frequently used in the article in order to show specificity.
