Abstract

The linguistic phenomenon of Code-switching is presented in this paper. The code-switching existence as bilingual and multilingual phenomenon. This study set out to learn more about the code-switching used by the speakers of Arabic descendants in Ampel Surabaya. The first theory of types of codeswitching by Wardaugh (2006) and the second theory of reason of code-switching by Holmes (2008). The objectives of this study are to investigate a) the types of code-switching used by the speaker, b) the factors underlying the code-switching. Recordings and interviews were used for data collecting; the speakers‟ utterances were recorded and transcripts were produced. The speakers were interviewed to find out more about the factors underlying code-switching in Ampel Surabaya. The result of the research shows that the speakers mostly use intra-sentential code switching. Also, the result of the interview shows that they do code-switch either to the certain participants or solidarity. It is used to make the meaning clear, so the addressee could understand what the speaker means.
