Abstract
Introduction. Hypertension was disease that caused heart problems if not controlled. Based on preliminary study in Tanjung Karang Public Health Center, 12 from 20 elderly suffered hypertension and 4 of them had been given low salt dietary but they disobeyed it. This study aimed to analyze factors that affect dietary compliance of elderly with hypertension. Method. It was corelational research with cross-sectional approach. Samples were taken used purposive sampling and obtained 52 elderly in Tanjung Karang Public Health Center. Independent variables were education level, economy factor, family support, culture and lifestyle. Dependent variable was dietary compliance of elderly with hypertension. Data were collected through questionnaires and being analized using Spearman's Rho test with significance level of 0.05. Results. This study showed that education level did not have correlation with dietary compliance of elderly with hypertension (p= 0.7 , r=0,039). There were correlation between economy factor (p= 0.000, r=0,542), family support (p= 0.000, r=0,612, culture and lifestyle p= 0.000, r=0,779) with dietary compliance of elderly with hypertension. Those meant that better economic factor, familly support, culture and lifestyle caused increasing dietary compliance of elderly with hypertension. Discussion and conclusion. Economic factor, family support, culture and lifestyle were factors that affect dietary compliance of elderly with hypertension. Elderly were expected to maintain compliance by involving of family diet and a healthy lifestyle to control blood pressure. Health workers should provide conseling about hypertension dietary to elderly’s family.
