Abstract

Politeness strategies are developed in order to save the hearer’s face (Brown and Levinson, 1987). It means that the speaker makes efforts to save the face of interlocutors. This study was conducted in order to figure out the Politeness Strategies behind the utterances stated by the suspect in the criminal investigation by the police. The aim of this study is to find out the types of politeness strategies which are used by the suspect and to find out the types of politeness strategies which are mostly used by the suspect in the criminal investigation by the police. Further, the method of this study is qualitative approach. Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies were applied in analyzing the data. From the analysis, it was figured out that all types of politeness strategies from Brown and Levinson (1987) are used by the suspect. There are 22 utterances containing politeness strategies which are divided into four categories; 5 utterances for bald on-record, 3 utterances for positive politeness, 12 utterances for negative politeness, and 2 utterances for off-record. The data revealed that the politeness strategy frequentlyused by the suspect in the criminal investigation is negative politeness strategies. It indicates that the suspect oriented mainly toward satisfying the hearer’s face.By applying the appropriate negative politeness strategies, the speaker can mitigate the Face Threatening Act, such as utterances acknowledging or demonstrating respect for the hearer’s autonomy.
