Abstract

Nowadays, people are likely to choose online news media in order to get actual news. One of the biggest media which serves online news is The New York Times. As a form of discourse, news article is a part of a text. Halliday and Hasan (1976) argue that cohesion has a special role in the creation of text because it expresses the continuity which exists between one part of the text and another. This study aims to observe the use of cohesive devices in Article about ISIS Raid in Jakarta published in The New York Times Online Media. This study uses qualitative approach, in the way to get the objective of this research. This study produces several findings. First, grammatical cohesion is the most occurrences found and demonstrative reference “the” is the most frequent cohesive device in the article. Second, in lexical cohesion, repetition is the second highest occurrences cohesive device. Last, based on the occurrences, the finding of reference and substitution indicate that the authors want to make their article to be understandable and they want to avoid ambiguity for the readers in order to share complex information.
