Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss about the representation of cyborgs in Ex Machina movie and how the representation constructs the whiteness. The issues that will be discussed in this thesis are the representation of cyborgs and the construction of whiteness through the representation of cyborg characters in the movie. Representation theory by Stuart Hall and supporting theory Whiteness by Richard Dyer are used in this study to explain how the characters are represented and construct the whiteness. In this movie, white cyborg is represented by Ava and nonwhite cyborg is represented by Kyoko. Since the object of this study are cyborgs, the writer will also discuss about the creator of the cyborgs, Nathan and Caleb. Close reading is used as the method to collect the data and understand more about the issues mentioned. The result of this study is that the representation of cyborgs in the movie creates the distinction between ‘Us’ and ‘Them’, constructing the image of whiteness as superior, good, pure and normative.
