Abstract
Teachers have different strategies in teaching. The strategies used by the teacher influence the students’ ability to understand the lesson. This study examined teaching strategies used by the teacher at tenth grade students in SMA Antartika Sidoarjo by applying teaching strategies theory proposed by Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock (2001). Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock have nine high-yield teaching strategies that can be applied by the teachers in classroom. This study was conducted through observation of recording the process of English teaching to get to know the situation and condition at three English classes. The writer interviewed an English teacher of tenth grade in three classes. The final result of this study found that the English teacher used six strategies of nine strategies by Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock in three classes which are 1) identifying similarities and differences, 2) reinforcing effort and providing recognition, 3) homework and practice, 4) cooperative learning, 5) setting objectives and providing feedback, 6) cues, questions, and advance organizers. The teacher used the same strategies for teaching English in three classes.
