Abstract

Most people know that there are only two kinds of sex, male and female. Society also constructs the sexuality and gender identity for both sexes. Men are required to have masculine trait and women to have feminine trait. However, there are cases that allow human to have two sexes in one body, it is called intersex. Intersex people who have two sexes in a body at a time have difficulties in adjusting their gender identity to his sex identity. This study aimed to analyze the gender identity performed by an intersex character of Predestination film. The focus of this study is the process of the adjustment of gender identity and sex identity of Jane/John, the intersex character. The theory applied to this study is theory of Gender Performativity by Judith Butler and theory of gender stereotypes on women and men by Barbara Welter and Robert Brannon as the supporting theory. By conducting the qualitative approach in this study, the writer did the close reading to the film and categorized the chain of events of Jane/John’s life when s/he adjusting her/his gender identity in certain sex identity. The analysis of this study leads to the conclusion that Jane/John, as intersex person, still has to follow the social construction of sexuality and gender identity by performing three points based on gender performativity; the negotiation, the performativity, and the repetition of gender performativity.
