Abstract

The aim of this research is to know the effect of the extract of yacon leaves (Smallanthus sonchifolius) on the cells amount and the diameter of the islets of Langerhans pancreatic white rat (Rattus norvegicus) male Wistar strain that induced by alloxan. This research using diabetic rat induced by alloxan intraperitoneally with single dose of 120 mg/kg BW. This study devided into five groups, there are (K-) group of control white rat with giving of CMC Na 0,5%, (K+) group of white rat with diabetes mellitus and giving of CMC Na 0,5%, (P1) group of diabetic white rat were given extract of yacon leaves with dose of 200 mg/kg BW daily orally, (P2) group of diabetic white rat treated with yacon leaves extract at doses of 400 mg/kg BW daily orally, (P3) group of diabetic white rat were given with yacon leaves extract at dose 800 mg/Kg BW daily orally, therapy were given for 28 days. The observations were made to calculate the cells amount and the diameter of the islets of Langerhans pancreatic in the treatment group which was not significantly different (p>0.05) with the K+ group, but significantly different (p<0.05) with the control K- group. The results of this research indicate that the yacon leaves extract (Smallanthus sonchifolius) has not been able to increase the cells amount and extend the diameter of the islets of Langerhans pancreatic at the white rat (Rattus norvegicus) male Wistar strain that induced by alloxan.
