Abstract

Increased life expectancy associated with many diseases and psychological disorders. The elderly are particularly susceptible to health problems including depression caused by stress in the face of life changes such as retirement, illness, and disability, placement in a Panti Werdha, death of a spouse, as well as the decreasing availability of social support. This study aims to explain the relationship of social support to the incidence of depression in the elderly in Panti Werdha Hargo Dedali Surabaya. Methods :This research used a correlational design with crossectional approach. Samples were 20 elderly people who were in Panti Werdha Hargo Dedali Surabaya. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. The independent variable of research was social support of the elderly. Dependent variable was the incidence of depression in the elderly. Results :Analysis used Spearman's rho value obtained significance p = 0.037 r = -0.468. There was a significant relationship between social support and the incidence of elderly depression in Panti Werdha Hargo Dedali Surabaya. Analysis :Data were analyzed with Spearman rho correlation test with significance level α <0.05. The higher the social support the elderly, the lower the incidence of depression elderly. Discussion : Health workers, especially nurses can continue to improve the competence to be able to provide health services to the elderly, especially related to the provision of social support and the anticipated incidence of depression in elderly
