Abstract
Teaching English for young learners at Elementary School is different to adult learner. Teaching English for young learner needs different skills, because the young learners tend to be more active and noisy and based on the writer experience requires more effort to get their attention. The teachers for young learners must be joyful and creative. The teacher need to create activities which can improve the students’ skill in learning English. SD Islam Al-Azhar Kelapa Gading is one private school in Surabaya which has “A” accreditation. This school has developed the quality of Islam knowledge and also applied “Joyful Learning”. “Joyful Learning” is a developed system to approach the learning process for young learners, especially for 1st and 2nd graders. One such activities in the school - which supports “Joyful Learning” - is “English Morning”. This activity is compatible with 2nd grade students, because this activity engaging the students to learn English through fun ways. The 2nd grade students are excited to be part in this activity. It was an honour for the writer to be accepted in this school. Being Teacher in this school is a great experienced. The writer experienced being English Teacher, Teacher Assistant, and Handling English Morning. The writer could apply the subject in her major while she was doing internship as teacher there. The writer experienced some problem during the internship, such as: limitations of teaching material, the students being noisy. These problems could be easily settled by fellow colleagues. The teachers in this school are all professional, mostly they have been teaching for about 5 years. Being a teacher for young learner must be creative to create activities, which can engage the students. Young students require repeated vocabulary drilling, so they can easily remember and acquire the new words. The teacher needs to know the characteristic of their students as well, in some cases students in the class need to be treated differently. During her internship in this school the writer could improve her skills in English subject and other subjects that used English language. She recommends for the future intern to do their internship at SD Islam Al-Azhar Kelapa Gading. - Hopefully, SD Islam Kelapa Gading Surabaya always keep their vision and mission to make a better generation both are in hard skills and soft skills. The writer wish the teachers of SD Islam Al-Azhar Kelapa Gading Surabaya more guide for the next interns.
