Abstract

English is a must-have language because it is used by more than 1.5 billion speakers in the world for communication. In this digital age, new information and communication technologies are supported by English as well. And English as lingua franca means that people who do not share the same native language can communicate and share their purposes through English (Harmer, 2007). Thus, English is important language to be learnt and taught. Learning English can be started since young age, and family as the best teacher for this. But, in Indonesia, English lesson which was one of the main subjects in primary school has not been applied anymore since the curriculum 2013 (K-13) was released. Yet, some schools still teach their students English as one of the local-contents (muatan lokal) or subjects so the students still have it in their class. SD Islam Al-Azhar Syifa Budi is a private school in Surabaya with an “A” accreditation. This school emphasizes moral value about Islam and implements an education of excellent knowledge towards Insan-Kamil. It applies education based on al-Qur’an and as-Sunnah to shape integrity character and the harmony between individual being and social being. The establishment of this school also aims to guide and improve human resources in order to create a nation and ummah that have faith, akhlaq, and taqwa towards Allah SWT. This school’s teachers and staffs are very helpful. They assist the internship-takers very well. This school also provides facilities which support learning process well. Being a teacher who brings the value of teaching is important. The writer had an opportunity to be a teacher and did her internship in SD Islam Al-Azhar Syifa Budi Surabaya. It was wonderful to have an experience as a teacher in SD Islam Al-Azhar Syifa Budi. The writer experienced teaching English, preparing the lessons and evaluations, and joining girl class (keputrian). The girl class (keputrian) is a class for the female students from fourth grade to sixth grade. The lesson is about female’s aurat and akhil baligh. For the writer, such information was very good to improve her knowledge too. Even though she had some problems during internship, she was able to find the solutions. The courses that the writer took during her study also helped her to deal with the problems. The important things that she obtained from her internship are good experience as a teacher in Islamic school, patience in dealing with young learners, discipline and team-work.
