Abstract

Nowadays, movie represents the differences between men and women as seen from the selection of male or female as the main character and also from the linguistic features that are used. The aim of this study is to find out and compare the linguistic features in the dialogue played by the male main characters in Ghostbusters 1984 and the female main characters in Ghostbusters 2016 movies. Robin Lakoff’s ideas (1975) concerning linguistic differences between males and females were taken into account as the main theory of this research. In addition, theory from Coates (1996) are also used as the supporting theory. A qualitative approach was used in this study. The data were taken from the dialogues used in the original script of Ghostbusters 1984 and Ghostbusters 2016 movies which published in the internet. The findings of the study show that there are nine out of ten linguistic features found in the utterances of main characters in Ghostbusters 1984 and Ghostbusters 2016. “Rising Intonation” feature is frequently found in the main male characters of Ghostbusters 1984; while “Lexical Hedges and Fillers” feature is frequently found in the main female characters of Ghostbusters 2016.
