Abstract
Masculinity is something socially constructed that refers to man’s traits. It emphasizes the ranking traits, for instance, independent, assertive, decisive, rational, and etc. In traditional gender roles, gender-stereotype of masculine and feminine has been widely argued as the quality of being male and female in order to be accepted by the society. This idea is portrayed in Indonesia, particularly by the representation of a male model named Arif in Duta Cubit internet memes. Duta Cubit is a cyber movement as a public response to an Indonesian student who reports his teacher to police. This study aims to examine Duta Cubit memes’ meaning through the representation of Arif as the male model. The writer uses a qualitative method and Barthes’ Camera Lucida approach. A theory of masculinity by R.W.Connell is applied in order to gain a deeper understanding of the analysis. The finding shows by demasculinizing the representation of Arif’s in Duta Cubit memes has produced variations of effeminate men A keynote, strengthening traditional gender role in Duta Cubit memes has objectified and oppressed women position as subordination through cyberbullying. Therefore, the absence of Arif’s masculinity affirms hegemonic masculinity in Indonesia because it leads into gender-stereotype of feminity.
